Getting Started

What is hypnosis, and how does it work?

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention that you likely enter several times a day—such as while driving on autopilot or becoming absorbed in a movie. During hypnosis, the subconscious mind becomes more open to suggestion, allowing you to make deep, lasting changes.

At Awaken Hypnosis, we use this natural state to help you access inner resources, shift old patterns, and achieve your goals. Best of all, you remain mentally aware and in control the entire time.

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes, hypnosis is safe.  During hypnosis, your mind remains alert and aware, and your natural protective filter—sometimes called the critical factor—continues to function. If you hear something that doesn’t align with your beliefs or goals, you won’t accept it.

In every session at Awaken Hypnosis, we begin with a clear discussion of your goals. Every suggestion is crafted to support those goals and empower you to make meaningful, positive changes, allowing meaningful transformation to take place.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Because hypnosis is a natural state people go into on  their own, daily (driving, watching movies, or focused on a project) it may not feel like anything in particular. In hypnosis, you may feel  relaxed, and inward-focused, others feel very ordinary. Some people feel very calm or heavy, others feel light or mentally still. There’s no single “correct” feeling—it varies from person to person. What matters is that your mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions.

What if I’m nervous or skeptical?

That’s completely normal. Most people feel some uncertainty before trying hypnosis for the first time. Your first session is designed to build trust, answer all your questions, and help you feel comfortable. By the end, most clients are pleasantly surprised by how natural it feels.

What if I can’t be hypnotized?

Nearly anyone who wants to be hypnotized can be. What matters most is your willingness, comfort level, and focus. At Awaken Hypnosis, we prepare you thoroughly for success and tailor the experience to you.

Hypnosis is a collaborative process—you stay in control, aware, and actively participating in your transformation.

How do I know I was really hypnotized?

Most clients feel confident they were hypnotized by the end of the first session. You’ll be able to notice your mind responding in subtle but clear ways. We use structured methods and gentle testing so you can experience firsthand how hypnosis feels and works.

Is hypnosis right for me?

At Awaken Hypnosis, we work with people from all walks of life—students, parents, professionals, creatives, business owners, and retirees—anyone who’s ready to make a meaningful change. If you’re curious, motivated, and open to trying something new, hypnosis may be a great fit.

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need a goal and a willingness to explore what’s possible.

How can I get the most out of my sessions?

You’ll get the most out of your hypnosis sessions by arriving on time, well-rested, and free from distractions—both external and internal. Most importantly, come with an open mind and a willingness to follow your hypnotist’s directions. Also, complete any assigned reading or 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® practice between sessions.

The more engaged you are, the more lasting and meaningful your results can be.

Can hypnosis help if I don’t know what’s “wrong”?

Yes—hypnosis is ideal for exploring emotional or behavioral patterns that are hard to define. Your subconscious knows more than your conscious mind, and with the right approach, we can uncover what needs attention—even if you can’t name it.

What if I get emotional during a session?

That’s completely normal. Hypnosis often brings buried emotions to the surface so they can be acknowledged, processed, and released. At Awaken Hypnosis, we welcome your emotional responses as signs of progress and transformation.

How is this different from stage hypnosis?

Stage hypnosis is real but designed for entertainment. It works with volunteers who enjoy being the center of attention. At Awaken Hypnosis, your sessions are private, focused, and goal-driven—tailored to help you grow, not perform. You are always in control.

Hypnosis Applications

Hypnosis for nail-biting, gambling, shopping, or hair pulling

Hypnosis for other compulsive habits

We consider every client’s goals on a case-by-case basis. If you're seeking help with a diagnosed mental health or medical condition, we may require a referral from your doctor or therapist to proceed. This ensures your care is coordinated and appropriate for your needs.

What if my concern feels too private or hard to talk about?

At Awaken Hypnosis, we understand that some struggles are deeply personal—especially those that come with secrecy, shame, or misunderstanding. Whether you’re dealing with a habit, a private fear, a part of your identity, or something you’ve never spoken aloud, you’ll be met with compassion, professionalism, and confidentiality here.

We don’t judge. We work at your pace. And we’ll help you move toward the change that feels right for you.

Can hypnosis help with fear and avoidance patterns?

Yes—hypnosis is highly effective for resolving fear-based and avoidant behavior patterns. Whether it’s a fear of spiders, insects, needles, flying, driving, or public speaking, these responses often stem from subconscious programming that’s no longer helpful.

Through advanced hypnosis techniques, we can access and reprocess the root emotional triggers behind the fear—bringing exaggerated responses back into a healthy, manageable perspective. It’s like turning a mountain back into a molehill.

Clients often experience:

Reduced emotional reactivity

Increased confidence in previously avoided situations

Greater emotional freedom and peace of mind

Many people seek hypnosis for fear of flying, hypnosis for phobias, or help with other avoidant behaviors because hypnosis helps shift deep subconscious fear patterns quickly and effectively.

Disclaimer: Hypnosis is not a medical or psychological treatment. It is a non-therapeutic process used to support emotional balance and personal growth. Always consult your healthcare provider regarding medical or psychological concerns.

Can hypnosis help with stress-linked symptoms or conditions?

At Awaken Hypnosis, we do not use hypnosis to treat medical conditions. However, for health concerns where stress is known to worsen symptoms, hypnosis sessions and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® can help reduce stress and support overall well-being.

While hypnosis is never a substitute for medical care, it can complement it—especially when managing the emotional and physiological effects of stress. Clients often find support with stress-related conditions such as:

Tinnitus

Sleep disturbances

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Psoriasis

Other mind-body symptoms

Disclaimer: Hypnosis is not a medical or psychological treatment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. It may be used as a complementary approach to support relaxation, emotional balance, and quality of life. Always consult your healthcare provider for medical concerns.

How can stress affect tinnitus?

Stress doesn’t cause tinnitus, but it can significantly worsen how it feels. In turn, tinnitus can also increase stress, creating a difficult cycle. Addressing emotional well-being often helps reduce the intensity of tinnitus perception.

Can hypnosis help with tinnitus?

Yes. Hypnosis may support individuals in reducing the emotional impact of tinnitus. While it doesn’t “turn off” the sound itself, advanced hypnosis techniques can help:

Reduce distress and anxiety linked to tinnitus

Shift focus away from the sound

Improve sleep and relaxation

Restore a sense of control

At Awaken Hypnosis, we work with clients to access inner resources that support emotional resilience and peace of mind—even in the presence of tinnitus.

Can hypnosis help with relationships, parenting, or family stress?

Yes—hypnosis can help you become more emotionally resilient, clear, and balanced in your relationships. Whether you’re a parent, partner, or navigating family conflict, hypnosis helps you manage stress, set boundaries, and communicate more effectively.

For example, a teen may become more confident, even if their parent remains critical. A partner may find peace, even if their spouse is emotionally unavailable. Hypnosis supports your personal transformation, even when others don’t change.

Sometimes, just realizing others have their own struggles can be liberating. These insights often lead to healthier dynamics and improved peace of mind.

Do you work with clients who have ADHD?

Yes. Hypnosis can support focus, reduce emotional reactivity, and improve follow-through for many people with ADHD. We may use shorter or modified sessions depending on your needs. If you’re on medication, continue your usual dosage unless otherwise advised.

While hypnosis doesn’t treat ADHD, it can help reduce the stress and self-doubt that often compound the condition, improving confidence and focus.

Can hypnosis help with grief or loss?

Yes. Hypnosis for grief can support emotional healing, memory reconsolidation, and the release of guilt or unresolved emotions. While it doesn’t remove the pain of loss, it can help you carry it with more peace and insight.

We work gently and respectfully, always in alignment with your emotional readiness.

Can I use hypnosis alongside other forms of treatment or coaching?

Yes, many people find hypnosis to be a powerful addition to other forms of support, including treatment or personal development.

If you’re learning 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®, no referral is typically needed. This approach is taught as a self-help and personal growth system that empowers you to reprocess unhelpful beliefs, access deeper insight, and build emotional resilience. For example, a cancer patient or someone managing PTSD symptoms may enhance their healing journey by reducing stress through 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®.

While you’re under the care of a medical doctor or licensed mental health professional, we may request a referral or signed release to coordinate appropriately. This benefits you by ensuring ethical, professional support aligned with your overall treatment plan.

🎥 Video: Why a Psychiatrist Recommends 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®
Featuring Dr. Gregory P. Brown, MD – Professor of Psychiatry, Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV

In this video, Dr. Greg Brown explains why he encourages his psychiatric patients to use 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® at home as a complementary tool during treatment. He describes how this method empowers individuals to take an active role in their emotional well-being between sessions.

7th Path Self-Hypnosis® is a powerful, lifelong practice for clearing limiting beliefs, reprocessing emotions, and supporting overall mental and emotional health.

What does it mean to be more or less suggestible?

Suggestibility refers to how easily someone responds to suggestions, especially in a focused state like hypnosis. Some people enter that state more quickly than others—it’s just how your mind processes suggestions.

At Awaken Hypnosis, we tailor each session to your unique style. With the right preparation, almost anyone can succeed with hypnosis—regardless of their level of results.

What if I’ve tried other methods and nothing has worked?

Hypnosis often works when everything else has failed. Many people come to Awaken Hypnosis after trying other methods—therapy, medication, willpower, coaching—and still feel stuck.

What makes our work different is that we don’t just treat surface-level symptoms. We use advanced, structured systems like 5-PATH® Hypnosis and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® to uncover and release the emotional root causes of your struggle. These approaches are deep, focused, and highly personalized.

Even among hypnotists, not all techniques are equally effective. The work we do here is transformative—designed to go to the heart of the issue and help you break through blocks that may have held you back for years.

If other methods haven’t brought you lasting results, don’t give up. This could be the approach that finally works.

What is 5-PATH® Hypnosis?

5-PATH® (Five-Phase Advanced Transformational Hypnosis) is a systematic, powerful, and proven approach developed by Calvin D. Banyan, a respected leader in the field of professional hypnosis. At Awaken Hypnosis, this is the foundation of our one-on-one work with clients.

Unlike basic suggestion-only hypnosis, 5-PATH® is a structured, insight-driven process that goes beyond surface-level change. It addresses the emotional root causes behind unwanted behaviors, limiting beliefs, or internal conflict—allowing for lasting, meaningful transformation.

Because 5-PATH® works at the subconscious level and resolves core emotional patterns, it has been used effectively with a wide variety of concerns, including:

Unwanted habits

Anxiety and fear

Stress and emotional overwhelm

Confidence and performance blocks

Relationship patterns

Each phase of 5-PATH® is designed to:

Uncover and release the root cause of the issue

Replace limiting beliefs with more supportive ones

Align the subconscious with conscious goals

Create deep emotional healing and renewed self-worth

Your Certified Hypnosis Professional, Brenda Williams, will guide you through each phase with precision, care, and deep respect for your unique needs and goals. The system is adaptable and effective across a wide variety of issues—from habits and fears to emotional struggles and performance blocks.

5-PATH® is known for producing deep, lasting results—even when other methods have failed.

You can learn more about the 5-PATH® system here or bring your questions to your Discovery Call.

What is 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®, and how does it work?

7th Path Self-Hypnosis® is a powerful mind-body-spirit system developed by Cal Banyan, combining traditional self-hypnosis techniques with emotional and spiritual clearing. It’s designed not just to manage symptoms, but to support deep personal transformation.

This process works by helping you clear out limiting beliefs, internal conflicts, and unresolved emotions—often referred to as 'emotional baggage'—which may be holding you back in life.

According to Dr. Gregory P. Brown, Professor of Psychiatry at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, UNLV, 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® leverages memory reconsolidation to help the brain reprocess past emotional patterns in a healthier way. Over time, this results in greater clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.

Session Logistics

What can I expect in my first session?

Before your session, you’ll watch a short video called The Truth About Hypnosis and possibly The Secret Language of Feelings, depending on your goals. These lay a foundation for understanding how hypnosis works.

Your first session includes: - A pre-hypnosis interview (up to 45 minutes) - Discussion of your goals and background - An introduction to 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® (if applicable) - Your first customized hypnosis experience.

We never begin hypnosis until you feel confident and ready.

What can I expect in a typical session?

Each session begins with a brief check-in about your progress, including any assigned self-hypnosis or reading. Then we proceed with:

Review of your goals and challenges

Hypnosis work tailored to your needs

Reinforcement of new insights or behaviors

Post-session review and next steps

Every session builds on the last, moving you steadily toward your outcome.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the individual and their goals. Some issues—like smoking cessation—may require fewer sessions, while others, such as weight management, often take longer.

For example, weight loss work typically involves addressing habits, beliefs, emotional triggers, and lifestyle patterns. Since you can’t simply “quit” eating, the process often requires more support over time. A common approach includes 5–7 weekly sessions, followed by periodic check-ins to support long-term success and healthy maintenance.

Ultimately, your progress will guide the pace. We’ll work together to find the most efficient and effective path forward for you.

How long is each session?

Most sessions are 90 minutes. Occasionally, we recommend a longer (2.5–3 hour) session for deeper work early on. Shorter sessions may be used for children or clients with ADHD.

Session length is always guided by what’s best for your progress and comfort.

What do I need to do to prepare for a virtual session?

Choose a quiet, private space where you won’t be disturbed - Limit distractions from pets, devices, or people - Use a stable camera setup with a clear view of your face.

We also offer a brief tech-check before your first virtual session to ensure everything runs smoothly.

What happens if I need to pause or stop the process?

You’re always in control and may pause if necessary. That said, we recommend completing the session whenever possible. Abrupt interruptions may leave you feeling unsettled. If something comes up, just let us know so we can end the session smoothly.

Do you offer in-person sessions, or are they all virtual?

Currently, Awaken Hypnosis primarily offers virtual sessions, which many clients find convenient, effective, and deeply transformative—right from the comfort of their own homes. These sessions are conducted securely over Zoom and are ideal for people seeking flexible, professional support with minimal disruption to their schedule.

We are planning to open an in-person office in Chandler, Arizona, in late summer or fall 2025. In the meantime, limited in-person sessions may be available by special arrangement. If you prefer in-person work, feel free to reach out during your Discovery Call to discuss options.

How much do sessions cost?

Session fees are locally competitive and significantly lower than many 5-PATH® hypnotists’ rates. Pricing reflects the value of advanced, results-oriented hypnosis work.

You can discuss your needs and receive specific pricing during a Discovery Call.

Do you offer packages or discounts?

Yes. Packages are available and designed to support your progress through multiple phases of hypnosis. Some clients reach their goals in 4–5 sessions, while others benefit from 7–9 or more. The work is complete when the work is complete—but we aim to make it efficient and lasting.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

We require 48 hours (two business days) notice for cancellation without a fee. Missed appointments are charged at the current session rate.

How do I book a session?

Booking a session is easy! Visit Awaken-Hypnosis.com and click the purple “Discovery Session” button at the top right. This schedules a free consultation session to answer questions and arrange details. Or call 480-493-2473 to leave a message for Brenda. She returns calls within 24 hours whenever possible.

Conditions and Perspectives

What if I have a medical or psychological condition?

Many clients with medical or psychological conditions benefit from hypnosis. We follow Arizona law and best practices to ensure your safety. A referral or release form may be requested if you’re under care for a specific diagnosis.

We’re always happy to guide you through that process. Just ask during your Discovery Call.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

It depends on your goals and medical status:

You do need a referral if you’re using 5-PATH® to work with a diagnosed mental/emotional condition or are under a healthcare provider’s care

You may not need a referral if using hypnosis for habit change or stress reduction without medical oversight.

7th Path Self-Hypnosis® usually does not require a referral.

However, Awaken Hypnosis does not work with individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder or schizophrenia. While some licensed medical or mental health professionals—such as Dr. Greg Brown, a professor of psychiatry at Kirk Kerkorian Medical School with the University of Nevada—have incorporated 7th Path into their therapeutic work, we do not offer hypnosis services for these conditions at Awaken Hypnosis. If you are under the care of a licensed provider, we encourage you to consult them directly about the best tools for your healing.

How do I get a doctor’s referral?

Start by scheduling a free Discovery Phone Call—just call 480-493-2473 or use the link at the top of this page. If a referral is needed, we’ll provide a simple form that you can bring to your provider.

The completed form can be returned in one of two ways:

What about hypnotherapy?

The legal terms “hypnosis,” “hypnotist,” and “hypnotherapy” vary by state. At Awaken Hypnosis, we follow Arizona law. According to Arizona guidelines, we use the term hypnotherapy only when a client has been referred by or is under the supervision of a licensed medical or mental health professional. In all other cases, we refer to our services as hypnosis work.

Regardless of terminology, we use the same advanced, effective techniques to support lasting, fast, and transformational change for every client.

Will I be aware and in control during hypnosis?

Yes—you will be fully aware of everything that happens during your hypnosis sessions, and you will remain in control the entire time.

Hypnosis is a natural, focused state of attention—not unconsciousness. You’ll hear what’s being said, and you’ll be able to respond, reflect, and even speak if needed. In fact, your awareness and cooperation are essential to the process.

Everything that happens during your session is designed to support the goals you came in with. Your hypnotist acts as a guide, but you remain the one making the changes—on your terms, and in alignment with what matters most to you. “You can even choose to emerge from hypnosis at any time—though most clients are so engaged in the process, they don’t want to.”

If a suggestion doesn’t sit right with you, you’ll simply reject it or emerge from hypnosis on your own. In fact, all hypnosis is really self-hypnosis—you're in charge the whole time.

Is hypnosis compatible with my spiritual (or non-spiritual) beliefs?

Yes. Hypnosis is a natural, focused state of awareness—not a belief system. It doesn’t require any particular worldview, and it won’t interfere with your spiritual or religious beliefs. In fact, many clients feel that hypnosis helps them become more centered, self-aware, and aligned with their personal values or faith.

At Awaken Hypnosis, we tailor each session to you. Whether you consider yourself Christian or other faith, Latter-day Saint, spiritual-but-not-religious, atheist, agnostic, or simply curious—you’re welcome here.

What about the 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® system?

7th Path includes a personal “Delta Word” of your choosing. This could be “God,” “Jesus,” “Inner Wisdom,” “Truth,” or anything that resonates with your belief system—or lack thereof. The process works the same for everyone; it’s just adapted to speak in your language.

This system can feel like a spiritual practice, a structured meditation, or a mindset tool—depending on how you approach it.
